The Hi-Matic E (previously also reviewed by Hamish here) is a Minolta rangefinder with a Rokkor lens. The lens is a 40 mm f/1.7 lens of six elements in four groups. The same specification has been used in other much sought after Minolta rangefinder cameras, like the Hi-Matic 7sii. The Minolta Hi-Matics have history.

The Hi-Matic F is an automatic exposure camera that you have focus via a rangefinder. Being relativity light it's the perfect size camera to wear around your neck and take pretty much anywhere. Beautifully styled with defined separation between every part on the camera makes this quite a contrast to other "all one color" cameras.

I was thinking i would get a range finder camera. Being a big fan or Minolta already i figured I'd look for a Minolta Hi-Matic. But i see so many different models and types with different prices i am not sure which one to go for.

Der Bereich geht von Blende 2,7 - 4 Sek. und Blende 23 - 1/724 Sek..

(But not Dark Horse.) The Minolta Hi-Matic 7sii came up a bunch, but prices were spendy. However, it seemed like an earlier version, the Hi-Matic 7s was also a good camera without the high prices. I found one on eBay and in a few days I had my first film camera in over fifteen years. The Minolta Hi-Matic 7s was released in 1966.

Took these pictures using my Hi-Matic F. This is an Auto Exposure Rangefinder introduced by Minolta in 1972. It is very similar looking to the Konica C35 Automatic which was introduced in 1971, being a slight update of the 1968 C35. However, the cameras worked very differently. The C35s have a mechanical aperture and a set of shutter blades with a limited selection of speeds. Like its.

The frame counter is easy to read and shutter release is of the standard threaded type, with no ability to lock. The film bay, take up spool, and rewind crank are about as vanilla as it gets. No Canon QuickLoad technology here, but things are easy enough. When loading film, just pull up on the crank and the door pops open.

It wasn't an easy task to take the lens apart and could be my last fixed lens experiment for the struggle I faced :) This lens is both sharp and has a good bubble bokeh wide open - a rare combo.
